On Snowflake Ball and a Wrinkly Birthday After some frantic setup activities and last minute adjustments to the catering and the PA systems, the Snowflake Ball was ready to Rock & Roll by 7pm, guests expected by 8pm. Colin had sensibly supplied some refreshments for the leader team, for a small donation, and there were plenty of soft drinks for the Explorers. Carolyn, Lizzie, Dan and others had done sterling work on the decor for the Hall, in silver and blue. Carolyn had done the most superlative job on the food with enough to feed even the hungriest mob of Explorers. Stu, Dan and the A Team had erected both marquees and laid out the dance floor. Mark lent us his Dad's massive PA system, which, we were subsequently informed, could be clearly heard at Twyford Station and at Tesco in Woodley... oops! Carolyn supplied a white sheet and Christmas banner for all the Explorers to be photographed against as they arrived. Bob supplied the camera. Colin and the setup team were first into their Tuxes and waited patiently (and hungrily eying up the food!) while the Guests arrived. And we were not disappointed by the turnout.... As fine and well dressed a bunch of young adults as you are ever likely to meet. Wonderful ball gowns and cocktail dresses worn by all the ladies, very smart shirts, ties and bow ties with best bib and tucker from all the Explorers. Bill & Hazel arrived followed by Mark L all looking like "quality", James and Ashley even came dressed in matching his & his outfits! The evening just went on wonderfully, photos for the album, food of every type for everyone (and not a trace of Nuts, except the Explorers, of course!) and everyone had a lot of fun. The chairs around the the chiminere were very popular, which was initially lit by Dan but kept going by Mr Pyro Andy all evening. Although the food was started at 8pm it lasted right until the end, superb judgment on the quantities by Carolyn. Throughout the evening we had more photo shoots and of course our ears were constantly assaulted by the PA system! At 10:30 we had the fireworks in the car park, and they were good and noisy too! At midnight Colin was conned into making a Thank you speech on behalf of the DESC, Frazer, who sadly couldn't be there that night. After the short speech, Colin was hi-jacked with birthday cards and presents and a lovely cake (well actually a Fruit Rum Baba, but whose counting at that time of night!) with sparklers on it. Probably wise not to put 51 candles on it, not with the amount of rum Carolyn had put into it, and our fire alarm system would have believed we were on fire if we tried that! Those with permission stayed over to guard the tents (that was what they told us!) and many agreed to help out the next day with the take-down and clear-up. Another of those days when you are really proud to be an Explorer Scout leader. |

| National Scouts Gift of Peace Competition What are the Gifts for Peace? Gifts for Peace is a key programme for all Scouts to tackle local issues and make a difference in their communities. The Gifts for Peace projects are being implemented throughout 2006 and into 2007, Scouting’s Centenary. What better way to celebrate our 100th anniversary than by giving the gifts of understanding, tolerance, respect and a culture of peace to our communities? Scouts are working on projects in the following areas: 1. Managing conflict without violence, for example: peace and conflict resolution, problem solving, negotiation and mediation skills, anger management, gangs and street violence, working in support of human rights. 2. Challenging prejudice, for example: identifying and challenging prejudices and stereotypes such as racism, religious intolerance, bullying and gender. 3. Encouraging greater solidarity, for example: with underprivileged groups such as refugees, internally displaced people, asylum seekers, street children, ethnic minority groups, HIV/AIDS orphans. Scouts in over ninety countries are already working on Gifts for Peace projects. Contact your National Scout Organization or see the website for more information on how to get involved. When deciding on your entry, think about the story that you want to tell, the beginning, the middle and the end. You can take the same approach to recording your project in photographs, video or sound clips. news! Next Loddon District Explorer Unit Base meetings: Friday Base: 15th Dec, 20:00, "99th Reading Christmas Party" Next we have the Friday & Monday Base joint Explorer meeting on Saturday 16th Dec at Paddicks Patch, 19:00 to late for the Annual Explorer Snowflake Ball. Simple rules, one partner (if you have one, and want to bring them!) no uniform, no denim, just the full dress code of Tuxedo, DJs, Ballgowns and Cocktail dresses. Carolyn is laying on a full sumptuous buffet supper, there will be plenty of soft drinks, it will inevitably be heavy on the Sound System, so come on over, let your hair down! Don't forget to fill in the PC form if you want to make it an all night event! Urgent: We need your RSVP for the Snowflake Ball by mid-week to allow time for shopping and food preparation. Details RSVP Now! Snowflake Ball Permission to Camp Form Monday Base: Mon 18th Dec, 18:00 - 22:00, "Work Party Only" Meet Monday 18th Dec at Paddicks Patch 18:00 - 22:00 for what is technically a "Social" but since we have had a lot of those, and because we want to complete a lot of projects before the New Year, this will be a fun but working evening. Refreshments will be provided during the evening, and a Chip Supper will be bought for those that start very early at or before their tea time. Bring old clothes and come and help. The Fellowship Wrinklies have their meeting in the Hall (19:30 21:30) so we will have to work around them (very quietly!) Lots to do, indoor jobs (wiring up the LAN ports, new wiring for the Fire Alarm etc) outdoor jobs (roofing, bike rack, re-stacking the chair store), under ground jobs (below the Hall helping with poking up the wiring). If you don't want to help, as well as have some fun, please just go wander around your nearest local park and don't disturb us! Scouts at work and play! Once these Explorer & Paddicks projects are done, we can start some new ones in the New Year. And those that helped with the old ones, get to choose the new ones! So what facilities do YOU want around the Explorer Pod next year? Time to put your thinking cap on! On The Commisioner Notes... Well we had an inauspicious start to the meeting with relatively few Explorers turning out at flag break. Fortunately they all seemed to turn up as the flag was being unfurled. No doubt it was the patriotic fervour that spurred them on. The planned activity for the evening caught many by surprise including the Lead Explorer Dan H who was tasked with running the evening. Fortunately his co-conspirator Stu had been briefed by Colin in advance, which was just as well as Colin had made a lucky escape to a more civilized venue for the evening at the Folk Club. Scouting Skills made an unusual appearance for the evenings activities, and caught many of the Explorers by surprise. The plan was to build a fire, and to boil a gallon of water. The pot of water was to be hanging from a tripod that the Explorers constructed using pioneering poles. One or two groups need reminding that the pot of water was not meant to be in the fire, while one group needed reminding that the pot of water was not likely to boil if it was suspended at twelve foot in the air! The real challenge of the meeting was getting the fires started in the first instance. This always sounds easy to the Explorers, but without the aid of incendiary devices always poses a challenge. On Monday the task was made all the more difficult due to the fact that the site was waterlogged along with the wood for the fire. None the less they succeeded in their task, and after much effort they all were successful. I was impressed with Hugh's group who not only came first, but they had the presence of mind to boil a few potatoes in their gallon of water. Of course not all of the Explorers took up the challenge of the Scouting Skills. Dobbie comes to mind as one who took up a series of challenges given to him by Morgan. None being entirely in the realm of Scouting skills, more in the realm of the silly things that Scouts are known to to do! The first challenge was to eat a bag of sugar, which was abandoned. This followed the challenge of eating a tablespoon of coffee. He managed to achieve this dubious task, and his face while doing it was quite a sight. It all ended in tears however when the challenge of eating a spoon of chili resulted in a blow back of chili powder into his eyes! I think Dobbie now knows that sometimes it is not always a good idea to take on every silly task that is offered despite the rewards offered. Fortunately no harm was done. The evening ended without further incident, which I suppose is just as well.! Twyford Christmas Market & Fosters Christmas Fayre 9th Dec A very smooth start from Paddicks, trailer packed and ready to roll at 15:30 for a 16:00 tent job in Twyford. After some initial confusion at the road block, Bob the builder and his mate finally let us gain entry to the closed High Street. From wheels stopped to 20x10 tent up, it was under 15 mins even with concrete boots, walls, tables and chairs. The job was worth £60 so well worth doing in the lean winter months. Then it was back to Paddicks for the other two 30x15 tents. With more walls and tables we headed for Fosters Home to put up a marquee for their Annual Christmas Fayre. We raced over there but when we tried to erect one sideways in the Fosters courtyard, we found we were 3 foot too long for easily putting up both 30x15, so compromised on one 30x15 length ways instead. And then onto the wages, Carolyn's famous Fish & Chip support! Carolyn fed the team of 3 with her special homemade crispy battered fish & chips cooked for 6. The 3 of us ended up a bit stuffed, but it seemed impolite to leave any! We completed the tent job and waddled back to Paddicks to unload quickly. On Sunday, due to a timing problem, at 10am Colin took the tents down on his own. Well to be honest, with some help from a very pleasant bunch of "crims" doing their community service! And he was just starting to unpack at Paddicks, when the cavalry, in the form of Stu and Carolyn arrived to help finish off, and feed us all the promised Big Fry-Up Breakfast! Super! |

On Quiz Night, 4th Dec A good turnout, your editor understands, and an interesting evening of weird questions as well as easy ones. I look forward to a report on the detail, gossip and scandal if someone would care to pen one for the record? Leisure Activity Anniversary Camp for Emma, Andy & Dan, 2nd Dec A serious work party set to on Saturday morning and put up both 30x15 Marquees, flooring, lights heating and disco kit ready for the "Anniversary Camp" for Emma, Andy and Dan that night. They even managed to pack the trailer for the Extravaganza the next day ready for Colin to take home and meet everybody on site early morning. OK, so they forgot to pack some chairs, the gas spanner, tea, coffee and sugar, but let's not be picky, the tent was all there! The Party evening went extreemly well. Security was provided by "The Management" of Stu, James and Morgan, suitable suited and booted, wearing black "Security" sweat shirts and with their very own "Security Tent" in the car park. A few guests were politely relieved of "contraband items" before being allowed on site, (returnable when they left). "The Management" were happy to report that no Explorers "tried it on", probably because they knew Stu would be on the door. and would NOT have been happy! (Stu being unhappy is to be avoided, trust us on that one!) Reports from the Birthday People the next day were that the evening went far better than expectation and eveyone had a great time. There were no reports of problems of inappropriate behaviour, although it did get a bit "rough" in the Mush Pit at one stage, but that is regarded as an optional activity, if you don't like Mush Pit, then don't join in! Andy appologised the next day for apparently becoming a touch "tired and emotional" late in the evening, but he wandered off when his ''rents popped by, so no-one minded. Must have been something he ate? We all learn by experience, that's what Explorers is all about. Woodley Extravaganza 3rd Dec Despite the late night on Saturday, a lot of Explorers, some a little jaded looking(?) came down to Woodley precinct to help run the Winter Extravaganza. We basically help the stall holders setup, keep the place clear of litter, and clear all the rubbish away at the end, for which we get a free double pitch, and paid £100 for our work. Here we are in the Woodley Chronicle:
Please email Stu with your hours and he will work out the wages. |
