Monday Base: Mon 26th Mar, 19:30-21:30, "Surprise Evening"
The next Monday Base Explorer meeting is Clair's "Surprise Evening" on Mon 26th March at Paddicks Patch, at 19:30 and finishing at  21:30. Not your average night at Explorers, come prepared for anything to happen! You are politely reminded about our usual Uniform Policy, and that a helmet and bike lights are obligatory when attending Scout meetings.

Friday Base: Fri 30th Mar, "Final preparations for Snowdon"
Next Friday the Friday Base Explorers will be doing their final checks prior to their Snowdon Expedition. Usual Uniform Policy please, and once again you are all reminded that helmet and bike lights are obligatory when attending Scout meetings!

Mon 19th March, "Drown the DESC opportunity"
On Booking Lifts
"I can take a few Explorers in my car if you book early". Hmm, famous last words, from Sunday I had the car full, so asked Richard's Mum if she could help us drive them down, which she very kindly agreed to. But by Monday morning we already had two cars full and still the "Please can I have a lift" text messages flowed in, so asked my good friend Carol at 1st, if I could nick the Yellow Peril. She happily agreed, so the rest of Monday I just kept confirming the beeping requests. When I arrived with the Bus, we filled it, not an empty seat. Some future planners this bunch are! Gnash, gnash....
On drowning elderly leaders
Didn't manage to drown me, being a diver, swimmer and qualified lifeguard that probably wasn't going to happen, but did end up with a damaged rib in all the horse play (yes, I know Yellow Card, but when two burly 17 year old Explorers attack you from behind, there isn't much time to get your "Say no to bullying" yellow card out, even if I carried it in my bathers, and who the heck was being bullied here anyway! Mutter mutter...)
However, it WAS a fun evening, special thanks to Liz and Stu for doing the herding and paperwork, and especially to Liz who agreed to be "tail end Charlie" and make sure those who had correctly organised 'rental  transport got away safely with their doting parents, while I took the useless, un-coordinated, "couldn't even plan getting dressed in the morning" bunch back to their long suffering parents in the Yellow Peril. Mumble wheeze...
Bill and Hazel on the Germany timetable
The Germany Expedition members need to meet for final planning meeting, we had better invite the Rents too.
Date TBD, Bill is away a lot these next few weeks so we will fit around his & Hazels schedule. Hum ho...
St Georges Day, Sun 22nd April
MANDATORY attendance. View the latest details and planned activities
This is your 4 week notice to book days off from work, announce that you will not be going to Nanna's that afternoon, because you will ALL be with me from 8am - 4pm setting up and sorting out the St Georges Day activities on the Memorial ground, Woodford Park. I will NOT be best pleased if  you don't turn up, and lame excuses about cleaning out animals, Sunday jobs, paper-rounds, given 4 weeks notice, are NOT acceptable either. Splutter, dribble...

(Hmm! Ed says: DESC then shuffled off into dark corner muttering incoherently about rafts, sponges, paint and flags, and is helped into a nice clean white shirt with extra long sleeves with leather straps by two nice men in white coats.)

Loddon District Centenary Activity Day, Woodley Precinct, Sat 7th July
Aerial Runway
For the Loddon District Centenary Activity Day we plan to run our Aerial Runway down Woodley Precinct! This would be an excellent project for the Explorers. Mark E and his Dad will need to be closely involved on the design and setup. Current suggestion is Mark's Dad's tower and two heavy vehicles as the anchors. Mark to purchase new bungy ropes. Colin to look at a clip and pulley rope system to pull Scouts to the top, then a leader posted at the top of tower to unclip the rope, let Scout descend free-style, then lower clip and rope end to be pulled back to start point again.
This would save the complexity and risk of each Scout having to manually climb the tower.
Gateway
Our other plan is for a major pioneering project gateway with all the District's flags mounted on top of it at the Reading Road entrance to the precinct. Flags from all Groups will need to be borrowed for the day.
Please note: All Explorers are expected to attend

Scouting Centenary Sunrise, 1st August 2007, Paddicks Patch

Mon 12th March, "Cooking"
Cooking Skills
Fortunately it was a fine evening, because the cooking was the real Scout variety, using the Altar fires and real wood! Stu's careful Stores Management was spiked by Colin placing several cubic yards of unwanted toys for a Car Boot Sale in front of the axes & saw cupboard! A bit of toy box mining soon uncovered the cupboard and the axes were retrieved. Surprisingly a good number of fires were then successfully lit, and several teams even produced very edible food from the intentionally limited selection of items on offer in a "Ready Steady Cook" type competition.
Bill and Hazel on the Germany timetable
The Germany Expedition members retired indoors to hear from Bill, Hazel and Colin on the latest planning for the various side trips and some detail on the main traveling arrangements. Dobby's brewery trip sadly turned out to be in Baden Baden (roughly the same distance from the campsite as North Wales is from Woodley. Oops! Never mind, good try! Other side expeditions initially planned by Colin, were also deemed to be similarly too far away for comfort, considering the distance already driven to the camp site. Luckily Bill had previous experience of the area and came up with some excellent plans for Gorge walking, a Waterfall boat trip, hiking, biking and general town visiting activities.
The new Chubb safe, Pod tilting and leveling
The arrival of the 1 1/2 ton Chubb safe into the Pod (Fet's slight over-kill on local security arrangements!) also posed a further problem to the already slowly subsiding and tilting Pod! Fortunately Mark E was on hand with a massive car jack and managed to correct  the tilt, but not before causing great mirth when the safe pivoted on the existing props and lifted the entire Pod into the air like a surfacing whale! Luckily the escaping leviathan was quickly restrained by the giggling Explorers and Leaders then with  blocks now correctly positioned everything came back onto the level again!
Happy Birthday Dan
Many happy returns to Dan, who was 18 on Saturday. Welcome to Adulthood! Your editor is pleased to have a sneak exclusive, Dan is to be offered the very first warrant in the District for an ex-Young Leader! Doubly well done than man!

Lynda suggested sponsored purple helium balloons, one for each Scout in the District (well over 1000) whether present or not, and then have a grand release, with the press watching, in the shape of the Scout Fleur-de-Lisle.
